About Ladybird Baby Touch

Ladybird has been publishing the award-winning Baby Touch series since 2005. This tried and tested range is critically acclaimed by early years specialists and educators, and loved by parents and babies alike the world over. This Baby Touch app is a natural extension of the series. It draws on the strong Baby Touch philosophy and applies it to the fantastic functionality that the iPad and iPhone offer. The Baby Touch: Peekaboo App has been developed by the Ladybird team for babies that are 6-24 months old. You could, of course, use it with younger or older babies.

0-6 months

Babies react to light and naturally turn their eyes in that direction. The gentle movement of the characters on screen help to stimulate and develop tracking skills. Even from a month old, babies begin tracking movements from side-to-side, this skill continues to develop where eventually they are strong enough to support their heads and track movements of a great scope. By three months old babies are alert for longer periods, they can focus on small objects for a few seconds, they react to sound and clear images. They are beginning to love noise, animal sounds and funny sound effects in the app bring smiles and first giggles. The Baby Touch: Peekaboo App draws on all of this to stimulate and start to build the foundations for early language acquisition.

6-9 months

The sixth month old baby has good support now and their head movements are more controlled. They try to touch objects that in front of them 15 - 30 cms away. They love touching and rattling things. The Baby Touch: Peekaboo App really taps into this development - the colourful art and exiting sound effects encourages babies to touch the screen to reveal a new scenes and characters. The peekaboo premise is perfect for babies. As babies develop you will see how their attention span increases and their fine motors skills become more honed. By nine months your baby will be babbling along with the app and delighting in the partially hidden images. They know the meaning of "Bye bye" and "Hello" and will join in with the directions to "Wave to the baby!"

9-18 months

The difference between 12 and 18 months in development is huge. Your 18 month baby is so much more stable on their feet, using the Baby Touch: Peekaboo App with babies of this age bring new rewards for them. They can interact more logically, you can ask questions that require baby to point to the screen, to imitate noises etc. They are great jabberers now and are really beginning to understand language much more.

At all ages you and your baby can enjoy this app in two modes: - firstly by playing each individual theme and interacting with the character by touching the screen; or by selecting the "Play as movie" function, which disables the interactivity, and plays all four themes back to back. There is also the capacity to disable the voice over if you would rather read the screen text to your baby.
